Walk Like an Egyptian

So every time I walk down the hall now, I'm singing the Bangles' song.  We have been talking about the ancient Egyptian culture for some time now.  We started with the book The Egypt Game by Zilpha Keatley Snyder.  We have done some reading and other research.  The kids always enjoy creating a personalized sarchophagus for themselves.  Here is what Sam and Kennadee had to say about the project:

Our class did sarcophagi for social studies. and we had to trace each other. Then had to make our faces and make our arms and put two items that describe ourselves in our hands for example if you were a cowboy you would put a rope in one and a branding iron in the other.
We even got to do our names in hieroglyphics on the sarcophagus and colored the sarcophagus.
Some did shoes, and giant lips, and everything they like. It was great!

Solar Energy

We waited for a good sunny day to build our solar cookers.  We built them in the morning and let pieces of apple cook in them all day.  We also had pieces of apple that weren't in the cooker.  At the end of the day some students had apples that had gotten so warm they had turned brown and soft.  The outside apples were still pretty crisp because of the cold day.  It was a good experiment and showed us how the sun's energy can be harnessed.
